Firmaroad-Product Introduction

Firmaroad (M.O.E.)® SS-3 Chemical soil stabiliser is an ionic soil treatment which produces significant changes in the behavior of clay bearing material associated with earthworks projects.

Traditional methods of soil stabilisation verses others

Firstly, let us define the dictionary’s meaning of traditional:

We are living in an ever-changing world with modern updated ideas, faster electronics, safer vehicles, better medical services. The list is endless, so why should we accept that the traditional method of stabilising pavements by continuing to add cement/lime is the most efficient method, easiest method, most economical method, or most environmentally friendly method? Traditional does not necessarily mean the best or only option. There are alternatives available.

Why Firmaroad SS-3?

Clay, what is it, and how can we work with it?

Pavement Failure
Ionic Soil Stabilisation

When it comes to durability and longevity in road structures, one aspect often overlooked is flexibility which is essential to alleviate the vibrations and stresses of heavy vehicle traffic while combating the relentless forces of natural elements.

Whereas the addition of cement, lime, or some other products assist in the bonding and subsequent strengthening of pavements, these products generally produce rigid, non-flexible pavements which often have quite a limited life. Rigid structures fracture under pressure and vibration allowing moisture ingress, which in turn quickly leads to distortion and unravelling. Evidence confirms these methods generally require costly repeat applications after a few short years if their effectiveness is to be maintained.

So, how can we construct a flexible pavement?

One of the most common particles in road pavements is clay, and one of the most undesired and sometimes feared particles are also clay. This is mainly due to the lack of knowledge in the conversion of clay particles to benefit the structure of road pavements. Firmaroad SS-3 soil stabilising chemical permanently modifies the behavior of clay, so it is no longer regarded as destructive, but rather adds the advantage of water proofing and strengthening of road pavements.

The complex blend of chemicals in Firmaroad SS-3 are the result of extensive research into this lesser known, but extremely effective treatment that creates an ionic exchange of charges forever changing the relationship between clay and water. By treating the subgrade materials which often contain clay the strengthening of the road pavement begins earlier in the construction process.

As the foundational layer is strengthened and made water resistant, the actual pavement can be designed to have thinner layers, requiring less material and less machinery - all contributing to reducing construction times and costs.

The end result being a strong, microscopically flexible, durable pavement providing years of service as it resists the penetration of moisture.
